Historical Context

Design 341 falls within the mature period of A. Mylne & Co.'s practice, when the office had established itself as a leading designer of cruising and fishing vessels for Scottish clients. The 1930s saw Mylne produce designs across a range of sizes and purposes—from small working boats to larger cruising yachts. Vanda's specifications align with the office's pragmatic philosophy: modest scale, robust construction, and honest engineering. The choice of Bute Slip Dock as builder reinforces the strong connection between Mylne and Clyde-based yards. By 1934, auxiliary diesel engines were becoming standard in new designs, reflecting changing attitudes toward mechanical propulsion among yacht owners who valued reliability and convenience alongside traditional sailing qualities.
