Historical Context
By 1968, A. Mylne & Co. had been established for over seventy years, having founded their design office in 1896. The firm's portfolio encompassed racing yachts, cruising sailing vessels, and an increasing number of motor yacht designs catering to post-war demand for powered vessels. The late 1960s saw continued interest in compact, economical twin-screw cruisers suitable for amateur ownership and professional use. Design 470 exemplifies this trend: practical, modest in dimensions, and specified with readily available marine engines. Bute Slip Dock, the builder, operated within a regional context of Clyde shipbuilding and boat-building expertise that had developed over more than a century. The collaboration between A. Mylne & Co. and Scottish builders such as Bute Slip Dock was typical of the firm's working methods throughout its history.
