The Bolt 18 is a 5.5-metre all-electric yacht tender and runabout, designed by A. Mylne & Co. and built by Tinnemans in the Netherlands in 2012. Powered by a 135 bhp electric motor and lithium battery pack, the vessel is capable of exceeding 30 knots and was launched at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2012. In November 2012, a Bolt 18 set the British Water Speed Record for the National 'Unrestricted Electric Runabout' class at 32.77 mph. The design represents a significant development in high-performance electric propulsion for small yachts and tenders.

Bolt 18 was developed as the tender for the 36m motor yacht PF36 (deisgn No. 6701). Built in 2012, the tender was launched in Monaco and then St Tropez in 2012. She was fitted with a UQM PowerPro 100 electric motor, and a 400V 24kWh battery, giving her a cruising speed of 20 knots and a range of 10 miles. She later set the British Water Speed record in the "unlimited electric runabout" class on Coniston Water that year. Today she is on permanent display at the Scottish Maritime Museum in Irvine, Scotland.

History & Notes

The Mylne Bolt 18 is a fast, agile all electric boat and yacht tender powered by a 135bhp electric motor, and a bank of lithium batteries. The Bolt 18 represents a step change in the power and versatility of electric boats in the UK and Europe. Top speed is in excess of 30 knots. Monaco 2012 - Launch Date for the Bolt 18 Tender - from the drawing board of Mylne Yacht Design , designer of legendary yachts such as Thendara, Tigris, Atlantide etc., since 1896 November 2012 - Mylne set the British Water Speed Record at 32.77mph for the National "Unrestricted Electric Runabout" class. David Gray, the designer says "The boat is exceeding all our expectations in terms of speed, acceleration, autonomy, quietness and ride quality. We received an exceptional amount of attention at the Monaco Yacht Show, and later during Les Voiles de St Tropez. The simple lines, open plan, pollution free all electric propulsion, low maintenance and astonishing performance were very well received." Historical Context

The Bolt 18 represents an early and notable venture by A. Mylne & Co. into electric propulsion technology for high-performance small craft. Designed in 2012, at a time when battery and motor technology for marine applications was still developing, the design demonstrated the practice's capacity to apply innovation to contemporary challenges. The record-breaking performance achieved in 2012 positioned the Mylne office as pioneers in electric boat design within the United Kingdom. This project contrasts with the practice's historical focus on classic and traditional sailing yachts—such as Thendara, Tigris and Atlantide—but reflects the broader evolution of A. Mylne & Co. towards the end of its operational period.
